Larry Sims has spent over a decade crafting the iconic hairstyles of some of the biggest stars today, including Janet Jackson, Chloe Bailey, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Gabrielle Union, Mary J. Blige, Victoria Beckham, Queen Latifah, Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, and many more. With a career spanning more than 20 years in the entertainment industry, his journey began as a background dancer and evolved into starring on Bravo’s hit reality TV show, Invite Only Cabo. The Chicago native first introduced a piece of his hometown’s dance culture to mainstream media with Missy Elliott’s hit single, "Get Your Freak On."
Sims' multifaceted career started in Chicago, where he danced for house music artists and went on to become a dance captain and choreographer for local legends like Sparkle and Syleena Johnson. His talent soon brought him to Los
Angeles, where he danced for some of Hollywood’s biggest names. However, by 2011, Sims began to contemplate his future beyond dance, realizing that he wouldn’t want to continue in the profession forever. A pivotal moment came when his friend and fellow dancer, Christopher Maldonado, encouraged him to attend cosmetology school. Maldonado even offered Sims free room and board while he studied. Tragically, before this plan could be realized, Maldonado died in a plane crash that also took the life of singer and actress Aaliyah. This loss marked a turning point in Sims' life, prompting him to leave Los Angeles and return to Chicago for a year to attend Pivot Point International, which he regarded as the "Harvard of hair."
After graduating from beauty school, Sims returned to Los Angeles, determined to launch a new career as a hairstylist. He knew that transitioning from dance to hairstyling would take time, so he continued to accept dance jobs to support himself. Then, one dance opportunity came along that would change his life and propel his hairstyling career to new heights.
